Artist Statement
I work with ensemble theatre companies, composers, musicians, choreographers, visual artists, technicians, designers and writers – the living and the dead. In theaters and out of them. These practices reflect an interest in expanding what the theater can contain.My work is often intensely collaborative. On each project, the people, the subject matter, the objects in the room and the words spoken determine the look and feel of the work and its terms of engagement with the audience. I hold out for the notion that the work can change me. Does change me.In general, I:Am more interested in communication than representation.Am preoccupied with the intangible – the precarious, the almost lost – that drives me to actualize.

PrecipicePRECIPICE sets an intimate story of a young woman’s struggle in the epic landscape of America’s mountain west. Like the land around her, her wild spirit is crushed by disregard. She escapes to the precipice and leaps, awakening mute in a wilderness in which she must fight to find her voice. The opera’s visual world is evoked by miniature dioramas and large-scale video. The score, inspired by American folk music, art song, and the sounds of nature, features seven singers, string quintet, piano and mandolin. By drawing parallels between environmental and emotional damage, PRECIPICE looks at how we are silenced and exiled, and how we find our way to connection, both with each other and the natural world.

"Creative design and collaborative artistry make Prototype’s Precipice a triumph of small-production opera" -&#38;nbsp; Daniele Sahr, Sean and Heard International&#38;nbsp;

Barcelona Map of Shadows (opera)Mabou Mines/Skirball Center
Composer Mika Karlsson (Recipient of a NYSCA Commission)
Based on a play by Lluissa Cunille&#38;nbsp;

Barcelona Map of Shadows&#38;nbsp;is a mysterious story of the rented rooms in a rented apartment in an upper middle class neighborhood, and its terminally ill lease holder whose dying request is to be left alone with his wife. In 5 perplexing scenes by turns comic and tragic, he and his wife ask their tenants - a french teacher, a second string soccer play/security guard, and a young pregnant immigrant - to leave.&#38;nbsp; It is also a story of the city itself, on the brink of losing its identity to globalization.&#38;nbsp; The characters identities are far from fixed, their shifting subjectivities undo the social codings of high and low, masculine and feminine, center and the margin. Far from being a story of nostalgia for a city mourning its own loss, it instead transports you to those mysterious, marginal, concealed spaces that exist in the realm of everyday urban life where identity is always elusive and enigmatic.&#38;nbsp; Recipient of a NYSCA Commission for composer Mika Karlsson.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>In teaching,&#38;nbsp;my interest is in how history influences the contemporary landscape and putting students and their work on that historical trajectory.&#38;nbsp; I love teaching Brecht through the lense of contemporary perofrmance practice.&#38;nbsp; I know a lot about female playwrights from the 17th and 18th centuries and the work of contemporary Japanese playwright Toshiki Okada. I have a passion for helping students to make thier own work as a way to explore thier ideas in three dimensions and gain the knowledge they are seeking. For me theater is not just an interpretive art form, it is a generative form that can be taught on an undergraduate level. The vast majority of my teaching experience is in studio courses - acting, devising, directing plays, and mentoring/producing student work.

I am interested/available for engagements in academic and institutional settings, either to direct pre-existing texts with students, to make entirely new pieces with students as collaborators or to mentor and curate student created work.
Workshop
